I was told this odd plane is a box scraper, apparently used to remove the consignment details from wooden crates that were to be reused. Hardly used since found in a junk shop years ago, it is proving very handy for planing the planks and glue inside the hull. The swivelling head has a slightly convex sole and blade, the latter being very fiddly to adjust. Once sharp and set properly, it's a dream to use. The long handle, self aligning head and pulling motion all seem to come together. A very useful thing.
